“N o, fuck Emerson Rockhill, okay.” I pace the length of the bathroom, all ten feet of it. “How dare he think he can just come here and kiss me and tell me that what we have isn’t over. It was over last summer.” Kate and Shay exchange glances like I can’t see them, but news flash, I can see everything. There are mirrors everywhere! “I know what you’re thinking.”

Kate shrugs her shoulders. “Are you sure you know what I’m thinking?”

I narrow my eyes at her and stop pacing long enough to put a hand on my hip. “Unless you’re still considering the ass-eating conversation from earlier, I’m going to guess you’re contemplating how crazy I sound right now.”

“She hit the nail on the head. Sounds crazy to me.” Shay examines her fingernails when I shoot her a glare. “What? Georgia, he’s an attractive man. He wants to make up for whatever happened between the two of you last year that caused you to think it ended poorly. I don’t see what the deal is. If the sex was good and you just see this as some kind of vacation fling, what’s the problem?”

I can feel the pressure building. If I open my mouth, I’m going to explode.

Instead, Kate opens her mouth. “He’s a decent guy, right? Go screw his brains out. Make him work for it. Make him go down on you until his face is soaked, then fall asleep. That’s what guys do. You have all the power here, Georgia. If you want to make him pay for whatever happened, you can do that.”

There are a million little feelings I need them to understand. I might not have known Emerson’s last name, but what we had felt so much more intimate than that. I might not have imagined the rest of my life with him, but I couldn’t imagine the rest of it without him. Then I left Coral Bay and never heard from him again. I forgot him after a while, but I didn’t date again. I didn’t do anything again. I just went on with my life like nothing happened, bobbing along. Emerson was everything and nothing all at once, and I would do everything and nothing to have him back in my life.

“Just go back out there and go home with him,” Shay says in her flippant way. “Otherwise we aren’t letting you back in the Airbnb.”

There’s more to it than just sleeping with Emerson. To have sex with him means getting wrapped up in him once more. But walking away from him would be even harder.

I look in the mirror to make sure that the frazzled look in my eyes has disappeared. Emerson knocked it in to me when he pressed his lips to mine.

I still look a little wide-eyed and crazy, but a little less like I’m about to rip my clothes off and have sex with him right here, right now. “You guys will call me if you need me?” I ask their reflections.
